Nicotiana x sanderae

  • Native of Argentina, flowering tobacco is any gardener’s delight due to its intensely charming fragrance. Plant feature clusters of drooping tubular blossoms that perfume the particularly in the evening. They withstand drought. Breeders over the years have made the plants dwarf and because of this Nicotiana × sanderae hybrid are used as a house or garden plant. Plant it near a door or under your bedroom window where you can enjoy the aroma during the night. The single, 2 in. star-shaped flowers are produced in abundance. Relatively easy to grow and undemanding, this variety will grow to 3 ft. spread 15 to 18 in. in full sun. Adapts well to containers or a part-sun garden planting. It looks especially handsome with dark-foliaged trees or shrubs like Salvia. * Fragrant  * Tolerates heat

Tips for Growing Nicotiana

Days to Germinate: 10 to 20

Germination Temperature: 18 to 24 (°C)

Sowing Media / Soil Type: Well drained – soft soil mixed with sand

Sowing Depth: Surface

Sowing Method: Direct sow, transplant recommended

Water: Moderately depending upon the soil and climatic conditions – keep the soil moist but not too wet

Sun: Prefers full sun

Notes:  Do not cover seeds or cover very lightly as light is needed for germination. Adapts to containers or a part-sun garden planting. Sow on the surface of a good seed compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination. Transplant when large enough to handle and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out at 12 in. apart in a sunny spot on light well drained soil. Provide long days (10 hours or more) to promote uniform flowering. Tall varieties may need staking. Small seeds.
