Days to Germinate 07 to 15
Germination Temperature 15 to 24 °C
Sowing Depth Cover lightly
Sowing Method Direct sow
Sowing Media / Soil Type Well drained
Water Moderately depending upon the soil and climatic conditions – keep the soil moist but not too wet
Sun Prefers full sun – tolerates shade partially
Notes Nearly indestructible even with complete neglect in extreme conditions. Sow thinly and harvest sparingly till plants are established, after that they become more vigorous and self-sowing. Suited for container growing. Chives can suffer from a rust virus. If it occurs, cut back diseased growth and burn it. The plant should not be composted because the virus will live on in the compost and transfer to the ground. In the cool, wet days, downy mildew can be a problem. If this is the case, cut back all the remaining growth, dig the plant up, divide it, and replant in a new, prepared site.
